Bonus Points over Thanksgiving

I'm offering a unique opportunity for you to earn assessment bonus points, that can be applied to projects.  In order to earn the points, you must watch one or more of the selected films from the list below.  In addition, you will need to write a short (half page) review of the film(s), and answer a question or two about the film(s).  Different films are worth different point values.  You may earn up to 7 points total(worth more than a letter grade on the exam).

3 Point Films
-Cinema Paradiso (preferably the New Edition)
-Life is Beautiful
2 Point Films

Things to Note: Film-making and Cinematography are closely related to photography.  Films are a great way to feed your brain with new ideas.  In addition to the stories that are being told, closely examine the visual aspects of films such as compositions, camera angles, lighting, and symbolism. With films that you enjoy, take the time to re-watch them a few times.  Once you know the story, let your attention focus on the technical aspects of the the film and how it was created.  Take notes of ideas that you can apply to your own work.

Above is a quick list (with links to trailers) of some of my favorite films.  In order to make the list, they all have great stories, but must also be visually, aurally, and all-round technically impressive.

FYI- Some of these are foreign films.  Don't let subtitles deter you from some of the best film-making out there.  Just because the United States has the biggest film industry, does not mean it is always the best (a discussion for another time).  When experiencing foreign films, always watch with subtitles on; never dubbed.  You lose all of the acting with a voice-over, and the translation usually isn't as good as the subtitles.

One last thing... Give these films the credit and respect that they deserve and watch them on DVD, or a legit download (ie. netflix).  Please don't tarnish the beauty of them by watching a budget youtube version.  Also do your best to watch them in their entirety in a single sitting (note some are rather long).  Be present with the film.  Do not watch in pieces and do not watch and while engaging with your phone (umbilical cord).

Processing and Proofing Info Graphic

For this exercise you will draw from your lab experience with film processing and negative proofing to create a visual study guide.

Use the notes on the blog and posted in the room to create diagrams/instructionals for the below processes and concepts.  Be sure to include all parts in your guide.  Also include any helpful tips or tricks that you discovered along the way.

Diagrams w/Labels
-Enlarger Timer
-Layers of a Proof Sheet
-Define or Illustrate how to make a test strip
-Thumbnail/Descriptor of an over-exposed and under-exposed negative.

Instructions guide
Create a 10-step simplified instruction list for the basics of film processing, with thumbnails/illustrations.

This will be worth 50 homework points and will be due Friday September 28th

Lab #4 Basic Printing

Using any negatives (you may borrow the class negatives if needed), you are to
-Print 2 quality 5x7 prints.
Be sure to do the following...
-Select a strong negative (I can assist in your choice)
-Test strip AND sample strip each print (again, I will assist in selecting your exposure)
-2 different negatives.
-Prints are due Friday October 5th (Lab Grade will go onto 2nd quarter grades)

Note: You will have approximately 2 lab days to complete this assignment. Anticipate printing at least one image per lab period. It is imperative that you have your negatives on your lab day. If you do not think that you will finish in the allotted time, there will be lunchtime open labs (first come basis) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week and next week.

List of Five Artists

In preparation for the 10/10 in 2 Assignment, I want you to research artists from the list.  From your research, you should create a list of five potential artists that you are interested in for the the assignment.  List each of the five artists, along with a decent reason for why you would be interested in doing a presentation on that particular artist.  Your list will be due on Thursday by the end of class.  It will also provide fall-back options, should your primary choice be taken.

In addition to the list, provided with the assignment, the below artists are also approved for the assignment.

Ansel Adams
Matthew Brady
Herb Ritts
Robert Frank
John Heartfield
Lazlo Moholy-Nagy
Weegee
Lucas Samaras
Juergen Teller
Ralph Eugene Meatyard
Richard Misrach
Laura Williams
Julie Blackmon
Todd Hido

Lab #3 Proof Sheet

The proofing lab will be your check-off for shoot #1, film processing, as well as, how to make a contract print (proof sheet).

Once your film is processed, dry, and placed into a protective sleeve, you will want to make a contact print of the negative page.  Test strip for exposure, and proof the negative page.  After your print is dry, put your name & class period on the back in black sharpie. Turn finished work into your class tray by Friday September 21st.

Q1 Week 2 Terms

By the end of the week you should have an understanding of the following terms.  You will find the definitions in the notes, power points, and videos on the blog. I've given you the first. We will review terms next week.

-Photography: Latin for Light Drawing
-Camera Obscura:
-Contact Print:
-Photogram:
-Pinhole Camera:
-Wet Collodion:
-Emulsion:
-Latent Image:
-Silver Gelatin:

-Orthochromatic:
-Tray Processing:

Photogram / Lab #1

Photogram: is a recording of light onto an emulsion (light sensitive material). By using objects placed onto the emulsion, one can block the surface from light, thus exposing only the open areas.

Assignment:  Collect 3-5 small personal artifacts from home that would create an interesting graphic representation of who you are.  Solid objects look good, but objects that are transparent, translucent, and/or reflect light can also produce interesting results.  The objects should fit onto a 5"x7" piece of photo paper. Contemplate not only the objects, but also the arrangement of the objects for your photogram. In the darkroom, you will create a light recording of the objects when they are placed on the photo paper and processed.

Assessment:  This is a basic check of knowledge lab.  Successful demonstration of photograms and tray processing will award full points.
